CELEBRATING ANOTHER BIRTHDAY...MARK TWAIN - With Some Rare Film

One of our favorite legends here at the hotel has always been Mark Twain.  He was born on November 30, 1835 in a place called Missouri, Florida.  To celebrate his birthday, we wanted to post some very rare film footage of Twain that was shot in 1909 by his good friend Thomas Edison.  Enjoy!

TO ALL THAT HAVE SERVED OUR COUNTRY...HAPPY VETERANS DAY!

156 years ago - the Sixth Infantry were in town and our citizens were doing every thing to "provide a pleasant relief from their long journey" - including a banquet that evening at the Cary House.

TEEN-AGE IDOL HUNT...ELVIS - 1956 Headlines

Teen-age Idol Hunt is the headline from the October 11, 1956 edition of the local newspaper.  Rumors that Elvis was staying at the hotel (Room #311) caused quite a stir.

IT STARTED WITH A WHEELBARROW...JOHN STUDEBAKER - Building an Empire

John Studebaker made his first real money building wheelbarrows and then he and his brothers built an empire.  It's Wheelbarrow Johnnie's birthday on October 10th (1833).  He's a true legend here at the hotel because back in 1857 he helped to carry the bricks to build the original Cary House.

ANOTHER LEGENDARY GUEST...BETTE DAVIS - Stayed Here in 1938

September 8, 1938...the local newspaper reports that Bette Davis had stayed at the hotel earlier in the week.  She starred in two movies that year, The Sisters with Errol Flynn, and she won an Oscar for her role in Jezebel with Henry Fonda.  Here's a little clip from both films.  Enjoy!

BEFORE THE CARY HOUSE...THERE WAS THE "PLACER" - Cary's First Hotel

Later this month, we'll be celebrating the 157th birthday of the Historic Cary House Hotel (watch for news about our special birthday events September 26-28th).  But before Mr. Cary built his brick namesake hotel in 1857 - he owned another hotel just down the street.  The Placer Hotel burned to the ground on the evening of April 15, 1856 along with most of downtown Placerville.  Here's an article from September 1855 reporting on his hosting skills.

ANOTHER LEGENDARY GUEST...BUFFALO BILL - Our Guest Registry

Here's what we have in our Guest Registry, along with other samples of his autograph.  We can't be certain but they sure looks very similar - and no one had the internet back then to copy and practice signing.

OUR LEGENDARY FOUNDER...WILLIAM M. CARY - Our Only Photo

William M. Cary (1814-1893)
Our hotel's founder was originally from Indiana and came west during the Gold Rush.  His first business venture here was the Hotel Placer which burned to the ground in April, 1856.  He then moved up the street and built a three story brick hotel named the Cary House.  It opened on September 28, 1857 and it's been in business ever since.  Cary was very involved in the community and served on Placerville's very first City Council.  Later, he moved to Carson City and was a member of the Nevada State Legislature.

ANOTHER LEGENDARY GUEST... BLACK BART - Poem #1

AUGUST 3, 1877...Black Bart robs his fourth stagecoach (he robbed 28 all together), and gets away with $300 in gold coin, and a check worth $305. He's wearing a flour sack on his head, with two more to cover up his boots. Bart is terrified of horses so he's on foot, and while he's carrying a shotgun he never fires a shot during this robbery - or any of the others. For the first time, he leaves a poem behind at the scene.
