BEFORE THE CARY HOUSE...THERE WAS THE "PLACER" - Cary's First Hotel

 
Later this month, we'll be celebrating the 157th birthday of the Historic Cary House Hotel (watch for news about our special birthday events September 26-28th).  But before Mr. Cary built his brick namesake hotel in 1857 - he owned another hotel just down the street.  The Placer Hotel burned to the ground on the evening of April 15, 1856 along with most of downtown Placerville.  Here's an article from September 1855 reporting on his hosting skills.
