OUR LEGENDARY FOUNDER...WILLIAM M. CARY - Our Only Photo

William M. Cary (1814-1893)
Our hotel's founder was originally from Indiana and came west during the Gold Rush.  His first business venture here was the Hotel Placer which burned to the ground in April, 1856.  He then moved up the street and built a three story brick hotel named the Cary House.  It opened on September 28, 1857 and it's been in business ever since.  Cary was very involved in the community and served on Placerville's very first City Council.  Later, he moved to Carson City and was a member of the Nevada State Legislature.
